uPVC window FAQs

What’s the difference between uPVC and PVCu?

uPVC and PVCu are the same material - un-plasticised Polyvinyl Chloride. The only difference is the order of the letters in the abbreviation.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is used to make flexible items like faux-leather clothing and electric cable insulation. This material is flexible because it has a plasticising agent added to it.

The ‘u’ in uPVC (and PVCu) stands for ‘un-plasticised’. Meaning the plastic hasn’t been softened by adding a plasticising agent. This is a perfect material for windows and doors.

In the UK many people use the term uPVC, however in the 1980s manufacturers adopted the European naming convention - PVCu.

What are the benefits of uPVC windows?

uPVC windows are cheaper to purchase and install than aluminium or timber windows. uPVC windows also offer better energy saving and lower maintenance costs.

The main benefits are:

Energy efficiency: uPVC window frames are excellent insulators, helping to reduce heat loss during the winter and heat gain during the summer. This can lead to significant energy savings and a more comfortable indoor environment.

Durability: uPVC is a durable material that is resistant to rot, corrosion, and pests. Unlike wooden frames, uPVC frames do not warp, crack, or peel, ensuring they maintain their structural integrity over time.

Low maintenance: uPVC window frames require minimal maintenance. They do not need to be painted or stained and can be easily cleaned with soapy water, making them a low-cost and hassle-free option.

Weather-resistant: uPVC frames are highly weather-resistant, even in harsh climates. They can withstand exposure to sunlight, rain, and wind without deteriorating, making them suitable for various environments.

Noise reduction: The excellent insulation properties of uPVC frames not only help with energy efficiency but also contribute to noise reduction, creating a quieter and more peaceful indoor environment.

Security: uPVC frames are strong and sturdy, providing enhanced security for your home. Our uPVC windows come with multi-point locking systems, making them more secure against potential intruders.

Aesthetics: uPVC window frames come in various styles, colors, and finishes, offering flexibility in design to complement your home's aesthetics. Whether you prefer a traditional or modern look, uPVC frames can cater to your preferences.

Recyclable: uPVC is a recyclable material, which means that old frames can be recycled and used to produce new products, reducing environmental impact.

Cost-effective: uPVC window frames are generally more affordable than other materials, such as wood or aluminum. When considering their durability, low maintenance, and energy efficiency, they can be a cost-effective long-term investment.

How do I clean a uPVC window frame?

Our uPVC windows simply need an occasional wipe with a soft cloth or sponge and warm soap to keep them looking like new.

How long will a uPVC window last?

uPVC windows are a great long term solution with an average lifespan of up to 35 years.

A cheaper uPVC frame will be more likely to warp than a good quality frame and if the frames are not installed correctly they will become damp and draughty.

Are uPVC windows eco-friendly?

Our uPVC windows are 100% lead-free. They are produced in a zero operational wastage facility in the UK. Each uPVC frame is 100% recyclable and can be recycled up to 10 times. This gives each window an estimated lifespan of 350 years.
